Hi all,

I have a couple of stories on this particular rock, but think I will get better results here ::)

I have been told from 1 person that this is a fossil of fern in the rock, and from another I have been told that the rock is the type that get very fine cracks, and because of iron in the rock water has gotten into the rock, and the pattern is actually rust. He did give me a name for this but I cannot remember it.... Any help will be apreciated.

God bless
Peter

The name that comes to mind is dendritic. If it is an agate, it would be called a dendritic agate. If it is a common opal, it would be a dendritic opal. The story of the cracks filling with iron is correct. Great looking rock.

HH and good luck.

I think my uncle calls them Moss agate but I think it's more of a lay term.

You didn't happen to mention where you found it....... I doubt it was Wyoming, USA.
This is more what a fern fossil would look like.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies... I will look up all the terms and learn a bit ::) This rock was found at my place of work here in Johannesburg South Africa. The rock was laying in pieces, so I grabbed the best parts ;D

God bless,
Peter
