Found my first button yesterday at an old 1700's building. On the back is, RRANTER at the top and , RICH ORANGE on the bottom. Any help in id'ing this button would be appreciated. It's the same size of a dime. Wish I could post a picture, but I'm tech. challenged. Thank you.

After about an hour with a toothpick, my button on the back is Warrented Rich Orange. Plain on the front. Has a green patina, so I'm assuming that it is copper. According to what I found on the internet, it was made in Britain between 1810 and 1830. Shank is still on the back although it is bent.

For the most part what you found on it is about it other then size. Which would indicate a Cuff or Collar or Breast. Flat Buttons tale tales when there Military. Civilian Flats beside general age, makers marks giving up clues to origin. There's not a lot of info on the net about them.
Congrats on your first flat button. I like them second to Large Coppers.
Most are Brass, you'll get the same patina as copper depending on the ground.
If your used to old shotgun shell casings where you hunt. Don't pass them up they ring up about the same as flat buttons.
