That is the tongue part of a 2 piece buckle and is pre civil war. Great find!!!

thanks everyone. I have been hitting the spot where i found it. problem is its getting pretty overgrown. finding lots of square nails, one chinese coin also.

someone decided to mulch a couple of large trees in the area, covering a pretty large radius.

after a a few days of looking i have found the other half of the Sash buckle!
