Just got a red book and loupe for Christmas so I went through my wheats. Found that one of them was a 1909 vdb.

very cool. the soil was very kind to it. sometimes wheats here come out like that and other times they have green crusty patches that won't hardly come off. that one is nice!

does anyone know of anyone who has actually dug an "s"?

I would imagine the odds would be insanely low for that to happen. my dad was crazy into coin collecting as a kid back in the early 50's and has told me he exhausted himself scouring roll after roll of wheat pennies looking for an s.....to no avail. so with that in mind, if I actually dug one....that would be beyond a "bucket list" find!:laughing7:

as I type this, I realize, I probably never even checked the dates on half of my wheats.......that pretty dumb! if they are hard to read, they get cast aside and never really looked at again, I got half a coffee can full.

I did get a rock tumbler for xmas though:thumbsup: but im guessing that would ruin most numismatic value

the vast majority of my wheats look like crap too, but for whatever reason there were 3 or 4 in my tin that were in real good shape...luckily this one was one of them

I dug a 1909 s wheat this month, but no vdb. The book said it was worth more than $100, whereas the vdb was worth $20 or less I think.
