I found this button at the same place as my Enfield bullet. The button was smooth so i put it aside.

Today i started cleaning it and this is what i found.

button.jpg

I can make out the letters L and S on both sides of the button and the word Mechanic on the bottom.

Not sure what the top says...looks like a number....possibly 068

Any ideas on the history of this button?

No shank on the back

LOL so this is my find for the day!

Thanks Hawk, This may be one of those buttons that never gets identified. I was very surprised to find that this button was not smooth and in fact had lettering under the crust

WOW thank you for the info! Is their any specific book you would recommend to us that would help identify buttons?

A DESCRIPTIVE CATALOG of PICTORIAL OVERALL BUTTONS WORN ON WORK CLOTHING 1900-1935 by Louella Yeargai, Ray Yeargain and Jerry DeHa, is a very good one for wobble shank buttons.
The BIG BOOK OF BUTTONS by Hughes & Lester is very expensive, but has a good section on them as well.
There are a couple of good websites also dedicated to work clothes and overall buttons.

It actually says Loeb, and is a button for "The Mechanic" brand overalls manufactured by Marcus Loeb and Co. The factory was in Atlanta, GA. Mechanic brand would be around 1920 or so.

Marcus Loeb founded his company in 1899. His earlier buttons bore his name as well as the brand. The later buttons just said Mechanic on them.
