Steve Libert told The Associated Press that his crew found the debris this month about 120 feet from the spot where they removed a wooden slab a year ago that was protruding from the lake bottom. Libert believes that timber was the bowsprit of Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle's ship,

The video is very compelling. Just saw it on Fox News.

I just happened to be doing research on d'Aire's Grifon in 1715 when the story came up on the TV. Kinda freaky.

I've actually stood on the spot on Rock Island where the ship departed from, and also dove off Poverty Island. There's lots of shipwrecks there, including the legend of a Confederate Civil war ship that threw some chests chained together overboard. I don't believe that one though.

I recall that the archies recovered some French buttons in from the sand beach from that era. It's now a state park.

It's 10 miles between the two. I've always thought the ship didn't make it too far. Bad storm fronts can and do come up fast.

Funny it wasn't found during the great scuba time in the 60's and 70's; lots of us were diving a lot during then and Poverty was a popular destination. Tons of dive shops up there then.

Still, more ships are found all the time - it's Big Water.

They should do tree ring aging on the planks.
