MIAMI IS A BUST!!!

I'm so frustrated at the relative "newness" of Miami Florida and its surroundings. To top it off, if that wasn't bad enough.....the places that WERE actually old have been paved over and built upon! There hardly ANYTHING or ANYWHERE left where an urban treasure hunter can find old stuff anymore. Its disappointing and sad to see most of the history of this city and those around it vaninshing by the second!!!!! :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead:

You have thousands upon thousands of drunk tourists all over the beaches, probably losing everything but the kitchen sink (you just never know!)... I really wouldn't be complaining if I were down there!! Or do you just stick to inland hunting?
Either way, I know I'd get to the beaches if I had the time.
I do know what you say though about the historical places being built over... it is happening all across Florida.
"Newer & Better" things. *shrugs*

No...please don't get me wrong....this place is a Mecca for beach hunting! But regarding the historical aspect.....there aren't any places here to find old U.S. coins like in New England and the Carolinas. I know I know.....there's Spanish coins still to be found...but I hope you understand what I'm saying about the other stuff.

Oh yeah, definitely... that makes perfect sense. I just wasn't completely sure if you were already counting the beaches out.
Our state definitely has a very rich history, but unfortunately ALOT of it is now covered up by modern buildings and roads. It makes research even harder when you get to a spot, only to have to give up because of what's there now. But I'm betting there is still alot of stuff still out there, waiting to be found! Miami may be an exception though because of all of the development down there. :-\

Very true on the "getting disappointed about researching an older area that is now a condo". I'm starting to branch out now to other parts though. As a Firefighter, I have plenty of days off to indulge on my "habit". I'm still starting out and am amazed (and yes, sometimes frustrated) when I see the other hunters here and elsewhere, and all the find's you guys have attained.

i know its a little late... i was out at cape canaveral the other day looking for some places cause i have family in the area that when i talked to them, my great grandmother told me of where they used to live on the north side of now NASA so i thought ok i will check it out... she also told me of a plantation out there that was from the 1700's SWEET!!!!!!!.
well needless to say i went out and everything is now blocked off for some wildlife project whereas before you could hunt out there.
i guess it just comes with the territory.

Well, I imagined the central and northern portions of Florida have been slower to "modernize" everything, but there ya have it. Just another example of how Florida is blocking out, paving over, building on, etc etc etc everything that once meant something! Sheesh....I think I'm headed to another state!

I have for years had the same problem. Most historic sites are off limits and/or covered with hard packed shell rock fill. Disturbed construction sites may hold some potential if you can gain access. The beaches here are full of clad crap, bottle caps and tin foil, but that is basically all we have left.

I have a few places that I want to search but you need a canoe for some of them. Do you have one? I could use a healthy enthusiastic partner. Have you tried the Treasure Coast?

Don't have a canoe on hand, but can get one in a jiffy! Hell....I can even get a motorized boat. My Firefighter co-workers are always willing to lend things to their fellow brothers . Hell yeah, I've been looking for a hunting partner down here with as much enthusiasm as I have. It gets boring hunting out there all alone. Part of the reason I haven't done it in a couple of months. I have a DFX and an Excal. And lets face it, some of our fellow South Floridian hunters are all about themselves and how many things they can find to rub it in our faces. lol I swear, sometimes I think a few of the same guys take photos of their wives' jewelry and claim they found it hunting just to piss us off. lol

Hey....the name's Tony. Let me know if you wanna get together and do a little hunting here and there. You push me I push you.....deal?

Hey Man,

I have been at this hobby just a few weeks and i also noticed that Miami to waaaay to modernized for this hobby. But there are still a few gems around South Florida, im sure. It just takes a bit of creativity. I think you just have to go west, past i75 im guessing?

Im located in North Miami, i head out a few times a week to Dania to Hallendale Beach.

The thing with going West of 75 is that there weren't many developed areas out there in the olden days, so the findings may be slim to none. I did a lot of research in the Historical Museum of South Florida and all that was out there in the old days were a lot of sugar cane fields. however, in my research at the Hollywood Historical Society, there was a lot of activity in Hollywood in the turn of the century, and still plenty of old homes to potentially investigate.

Yes Hollywood had a casino on Johnson Street. I detected the construction of the Hollywood Boardwalk a couple years back. Too bad I missed the part in front of the old casino. By the time I found out, it was already filled in that area. Here is the story. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,56837.0.html

I guess its just being creative in your spots. Dania Beach has a few places that have closed down...some business...

Mostly along Dania Beach BLVD, heading towards the pier.

Im Dale and I live in Hollywood. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any ideas. Maybe we could meet up on the local beach some day to start. The next strong East wind and Im headed to the Treasure Coast. But I like to search hard from sunup until sundown when I get on those Treasure Beaches because of the long drive . I would love to team up with someone. I often hike or canoe the Everglades which has some Seminole Indian War history. There are a few forts left to be found by someone determined. There is also Flight 409 which is a bit controversial but available on state owned land to anyone with an airboat.

hi this might sound a little bizzarre but Im a bizzarre kinda guy.
I took up metal detecting about a year ago for exercise (i was recovering from an accident)
as no one wants to hire a roofer that has had a broken neck Im still unemployed and likley to stay that way until I can get back into school and learn a new trade.
Ihave been paying some of my bills with my old detector I have found some old spots(mostly clad coins from the early 70's)
but my machine wont hit anything deeper than about 4 inches.(i know the stuff is there though)
I am going to get some new machines and in may( Ive got alot of family things in april) Im going to hit it just like a job 8 to 10 hrs a day 5 days a week I live in n miami-dade co and frequently detect in liberty-city,little hati, little havanna, ect.
I dont drive anymore but with the bus,tri-rail,and a bicycle I can meet someone about anywhere.
if anyone wants to throw in with a lunatic and do some serious hunting shoot me a pm
David
