I went out today and found a necklace that might be gold but not sure. It is herring bone. I was going through the clad I found and ran across a strange dime. To my amazement it was a merc. This is the first that I have found. They are rare here even though they are easy to come by in other parts of the country. Most have been cherry picked by detectorists from years past, so they are a bucket list item around here. Thanks for looking.

It seems to have a W mint mark. Is that common?

Good job. If you can access the sheriff's records from way back and locate what used to be called "liquor houses" you may score more. Look for shootings, stabbings, brawls etc. Good luck.

I didn't notice it when I found it, because it had so much black tarnish. It took a lot of baking soda and lemon juice to clean it up. There is still stubborn tarnish on the back of the coin. I am glad I checked my coins. I was going to throw them in my clad jar.

Congrats on your 1st merc, the mint mark is on the back of the coin near the bottom on the l/h side. Try the baking soda, boiling water and aluminum foil method. it will be shiny in about 1 minute, 2 minutes at the most. I only use acidic liquids like lemon juice on my clad in a tumbler.

Congrats on your first merc!!
It took me awhile to find my first merc, didn't think I'd ever find my first silver dime. Then it happened and I found a small merc spill, a 35 and 36 in the same hole. And I live on the East Coast?
