I would carry mace/pepper spray or some other way to defend yourself, if need be.
Some other things that come to mind are:
cell phone.
some sort of tent, or other shelter.
extra clothes, hat, gloves.
ziplock bag full of dryer lint - for starting fire if need be.
large/jumbo size cotton balls with vaseline rubbed into them - fire starter
several lighters or a box of wooden matches.
Most importantly, take a buddy with you or at the very least leave a detailed plan at home
of your route and in what area you will be with description of the clothes that you will be
wearing. Don't want to jinx your plans, just in case it is needed, authorities will have it.
Avoid wet and cold - they can be a very dangerous pair.

Hope it helps. Please let us know what you have found and how the hike was.

This was well said, especially to be prepared for anything. Since this is only a day trip depending on far you are traveling, the number one thing you must have are good hiking boots. You need to keep the feet protected as those are your "wheels". Always have 2 pairs of extra socks and keep those feet dry.
