First time poster and newbe, so take it easy on me! :hello:

My father recently gave my two older sons his metal detector and accessories, so yesterday I took them over to the local beach here in Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay to give the detector a go. Aside from the fact the wind was howling, it was freezing, followed by some sleet, which limited our time, the detector seemed to work well.

We found a dime, a can, a hair clip, a split shot (seen in the pic) and this rock that gave a very strong return, which brings me to your forum.

Can anyone identify this rock? We thought we had it figured out only to have one characteristic or another refute our conclusion.

Characteristics:

1) Strong return for metal.

2) Seems porous, which seems to point to that it was molten at some point.

3) It is very light.

4) It floats - originally we thought scoria up until we gave it the float test. thought pumice, but I understand pumice doesn't typically contain metal?

5) It has a smell similar to that of burnt fireworks.

6) It is approx. 5" long and 2.5" wide.

7) It is not magnetic.

Any ideas?

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard cssnms! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

2nd - I moved from Today's Finds! over to Forum: Rocks/Gems for more exposure.
