I thought I posted a reply to this about an hour ago! That's what I get for thinking! I'll try not to do it again. That is a really nice find and pretty rare in my book. Was the piece of wood laying on the ground, buried or still a part of a standing but obviously dead tree?
Maybe use a polyurethane sealer? Or post a question in the cleaning and preservation forum here.

That's awesome! I would think some type of Tung oil should do the job.

The piece was buried in a low "moist" area, not swampy but close. I think that moist ground kept the wood from totally rotting but now that it's out of the ground it's drying pretty fast. Thanks for suggesting the Cleaning & Preservation, I need to spend some time there.
Dharmacy mentioned Tung Oil and I think that's what I used in the past...going to get some today.---JB

I'm pretty sure that Tung Oil is what I've used in the past with success, I'm going to get this project done right after work today. Thanks for your help--JB

PVA beads is the only thing I use on wood/bone/leather or anything of such. Just add acetone. This is what archeologists use.

Nice find. There won't be too many more of those found. Wood that was shot into in the CW has about lived its' life. Congrats and thanks for posting it.

What a great find. I hope you are able to preserve it for future generations. Very unique.
