I went out to visit my parents this weekend in Montauk, NY. I told myself I wasn't going to detect but my sister told me of an old school foundation. So I went for an hour.

It was mostly iron, everywhere, and no high signals. I'm sure it has been hammered for many years. I did manage to pull a very nice flat button, another flat, what I think is a saddle tack, and a small hinge. All low signals. Not a spectacular hunt, although that one button is an instant favorite!

In case you were wondering, I'm always prepared with a detector, even if I don't plan on hunting. You never know when an opportunity may present itself...

Cheers

Steve

Nice finds! That carved button is pretty cool. The saddle tacks we found are all copper/brass (not sure which) not sure about yours

Its a cufflink or linked button, from the 18th C, we see quite a few. Some copper, less in silver, & rare ones in gold.

I think the hinge, might be a book clasp.

Thanks for the correction Cru. You know, part of me knew it was a cufflink due to octagonal shape - those we see quite a bit on here.

Either way it was still nice digging something (new world) old when all I was planning on doing this weekend was drinking some pints and the beach.

So what are your thoughts in age? My guess beforehand was 1750-1790.

Yes that seems in the right ballpark.

Yep, that was my hangup with it being a saddle tack as well. I've only seen brass ones myself but thought maybe it's a fancy white glazed designer tack. Lol

Thanks Chris. I had seen them on here but like Cru said, on cufflinks. The important thing was my sister thought they were super cool and was impressed by her little brother's MD skiilz. Lol

I'm a bit puzzled Sutphin. Not quite sure what to make of it. The pin was deep so it's not new, but on the other hand, too many years would have rusted that pin away. Dunno buddy.
