I find it interesting the human oils that are obviously embedded into these pieces.
I have to assume it all comes from recent times? I mean a tool mounted on a piece of wood wouldn't get touched that much under everyday use. Or is that dark shine not from oils?

Any insight?

The shine you see is just the areas of higher polish not likely oils from being handled by humans.
This polish on the bit could be from some use wear, or it could be high polish from simply being made properly.
The bit of an axe or celt wouldn't work without a nicely finished business end. See how completely this bit is polished?
