Opensource Software for recording Research Data?

Hi everyone... My apologies if this isn't the best place to post this.

I am curious if there are any Open Source software packages out there, specifically intended for recording research data? Not looking for anything specific to treasure hunting, but general archaeology, etc., would be fine too.

I'm just trying to find a good solution to store all of the various tidbits I find. Raw text notes, Wreck/Treasure data, Pictures, GPS Data, Maps, links to online URL's, etc.

In the past, I've used a combination of tools I've put together (MySQL, MediaWiki, etc.), but am hoping there exists software packages out there that would accommodate my needs, without me re-inventing the wheel.

True, a trusty old notebook would work fine for myself... But collaboration and sharing of data becomes more difficult with a notebook.

Not sure how it'd work for you but CDs. I put my notes drawings scanned maps etc on CDs one disk for each project or subject. I've scanned my notebooks & napkin drawings and have them stored. If I want to share info, I just grab the disk and share a file or two. Later down the line, I don't have to worry about if my data will work with the warez I'm using now. Sometimes simple is the way to go.

What operating system are you running? I use Ubuntu and it's pretty much all open source, but not sure about compatibility with other OS's

I've got Win98, WinXP and Windows 7. ...Oh, and an original Compaq portable - back when everything was DOS!!

I do UNIX/Linux consulting, so my datacenter/lab has about 130 Linux Virtual machines, and maybe 3 or 4 Windows servers. The OS doesn't really matter much to me -- most of the opensource tools will compile and run in windows too. I'm just having trouble finding a software package created for the purpose of tracking research tidbits. There is probably some fancy name for it, that I just don't know -- which is why I am running into dead ends trying to google...

I use Tellico my self because I sell everything I recover and need to keep records for tax reasons and the first step is when it is recovered. It allows me to add pictures, GPS data, time & date of recovery, sales paperwork and much more. At the end of the year I just send all the data to my attorney to sort out for taxes.
