The wife went with me to the thrift store today and spotted this set of chess pieces before I did. I couldn't find a manufacturers mark of any kind. It looks like someone added felt to the bottoms which may have covered up any marks. I'm somewhat reluctant to pull off a felt to see so I'm asking if anyone has seen a set like this. The pieces are either brown or cream colored. Pawns are monkeys of some sort & the other pieces are larger animals. The pieces are resin of some sort & heavy for their size. Not something I generally purchase but for $4 I figured what the heck.

I've never seen any before. They definitely have the whimsical factor. Cool find.

I'm thinking soapstone from Kenya. Pull off the felt on one or two of the larger pieces. Not difficult to re-attach.
