Found four little flakes today of worked chert, the black piece with the orange specks is kind of neat, looks like it was a corner of something. Pretty stuff. Then I found first one of these I?ve found. It?s large, not sure if it?s a core piece or and actual big chopper, but it is chert. Was just mixed in with other rock rubble along back wall. I knew it was something when my little rake hit it. Made the sound. Info on this piece is appreciated by you guys that have been doing this much longer than me. I was happy to pull it out of thereImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1625528996.183189.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1625529013.482458.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1625529025.819820.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1625529045.671889.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1625529060.689267.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1625529081.807345.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1625529094.104288.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1625529112.293573.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1625529139.928496.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1625529154.624933.jpg

Thanks for the look

Love the core

So a core means that it is the center of the rock, did it serve a purpose or they were just harvesting the nice chert out of the center of a large nodule ? Just trying to learn. Thought it may have been a tool as I found it hidden in back of large sitting stone

Thanks

I agree the bigger pieces look like cores. The Hopewell peoples (where I go in Ohio), would knock off sharp "flake knives" from the cores and use them for precision cutting. The cores are what was left over. Here are a couple Flint Ridge, Ohio cores in place before I picked them up from this past weekend.IMG_2994.JPGIMG_2995.JPG

The last pic is a classic core. They struck bladelets from it as cutting tools. Many of the flakes you find were actually struck just for a cutting edge and then discarded.

That was it today. Couple little flakes. This place is proving to be a little less giving so far.

That's some awesome material (I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that :laughing7:). If you find something complete there it's going to be good.
