South Australia's Deadliest Shipwreck ...
Over the past 175 years, there have been more than 500 shipwrecks at sea and along the River Murray. But none is more tragic than the Admella, which remains the worst maritime disaster in the history of South Australia. For more than a week, terrified survivors clung to the ship’s wreckage as various rescue attempts were made to pluck them from an exposed reef. This is their incredible story.
The SS Admella was a Scottish-built iron steamer which ran between Adelaide and Melbourne. Early on Friday, August 5, 1859, she left Port Adelaide with 82 passengers, 31 crew, seven horses and a load of cargo, including flour for the Chinese goldfields and 93 tons of copper.
