Bramblefind, you're a star, many thanks. How did a Medieval Russian coin get to Yorkshire. Robert.

Between how small that coin is and the low silver content described in the above article, it's an amazing find. You must have had your ears tuned in perfectly because one misstep and that baby could have been missed. Nice work!!

Silver is silver, when paying per weight even a russian coin had it's value in England. Great find! Never seen one one here before. In fact, this is the first i ever see. :icon_thumleft:

That was a great ID!!!

But it states 18th C mostly, not Medieval. Takes nothing away from it though, I would have had no idea where to start looking because it looked a little like a Celtic Silver. Amazing!

As Bramblefind mentioned, it's a 'kopeck'; named after the spear the horseman carries. Had he been holding a sword, the coin would be a 'denga'. The kopeck equaled two silver dengas. The dengas were very small. How small??? Four could fit within the perimeter of a one cent US coin. The kopeck was first struck in 1534 and continued to be struck until 1718.
It's a find loaded with history. Congrats !!
