Ok, so I was hunting a box of pennies my grandma gave me, and I got this wheat penny. What type of error is it, and how rare would it be?

Looks like it could be what they call a Broadstrike if so it would be the first known of its kind

A pic of the reverse please? You're only showing us 1/2 of this coins story.

Wasn't that the first pic he posted?
Ah yes, another head-in-the-sand moment for me! :BangHead:

With that much wear on the obverse and that groove on the reverse, looks pretty certain that it got caught in some sort of mechanical device. This is definitely PMD.

It's very interesting to me. I just wonder what kind of a tale it has to tell....

It looks like it was used to cap a 1/2 inch pipe, place it over the end and screw a fitting onto it. I have done it myself, a cent works for 1/2 inch and a nickel works for 3/4.

If you put another penny on top of it is it exactly the same size? I think this is a capped die reverse and possibly a die trial obverse
