Jim,
Here is my stand-in until I find the Brunton. Plastimo Iris 50. I own two (nothing wrong with redundancy on a sailboat). Although marine-specific, the sight-across-the-top feature allows me to cross a section with less than 15 foot accuracy. (THAT is a challenge boast!) I am a MAP guy! I used to teach map and compass classes. I own several baseplates, sighters, cammengas, and others. Fave is still the Brunton. I don't see a "prospector's" version at rocgear.com What would be today's version of the "P"?

I think Barry's right. There aren't a lot of brands available in this line. I bought my Brunton used. Don't remember what I paid for it, but it sure wasn't $700....LOL, For strike, any compass will work. The dip is a little more complicated, but I'd bet there's something out there that would work, without spending big bucks. I'll have to do a little research on that.
Jim

Mine is just the hand held inclinometer..used it for old mine shaft surveys, getting the slope of the shaft and tape measure to make 3D subsurface models in Autocad.

I have been known to use one of these attached to a magnetic bubble level!

Today you would probably be looking for the Geo as an equivalent.

A very useful alternative is the Axis Geologists Transit.

Both about the same price so it's a matter of individual preference.

Heavy Pans
Already have the 5010Geo.... just have to hunt it down. May still be on the boat in Titusville, FL. I have a strong sense of product loyalty (i.e. I would rather buy two Fords before buying a Beamer) Same goes for my Brunton. Just me, I guess. TTC

Yeah, I have Strike and Dip figured out, I use those terms when describing a limestone formation, in a specific area, as for those other two terms.., they're new to me!
I'm constantly learning, by being in this forum...!
Thanks everyone!

I think I need a "hands on" to really clarify that strike and dip stuff. Mental block, I suspect. Haven't had that "light bulb" go on yet. Maybe a video from one of the pros here is in order. TTC

I THINK I know what these words are but I need more. Anyone explain what they mean in LAYMAN'S terms? I keep seeing them in my gold/geology research yet I don't have as much grasp as I want to have. I've seen the definitions. Don't need that. Anyone help me? TTC

I probably mention all four of those and point them out in this video underground. Except for strike.

Wow quite the mine clip and thanks for posting. Looks like there are some values still there?
