FYI: Winter Shanties appear to be a Name given to Huts
Used By Gangs of Boys at the end of the 1800's. all Mention of "Winter Shanties" in pottsville's Miners Journal were Between 1890 & 1900. but the phrase appears to have lasted through 1910.
These Could have been abandoned places, Small freshly built huts, and etc. most were used to hide kids and their ill gotten gains, stolen from stores . change, marbles, Beer , Cigs etc.
older thieves in some cases took advantage of a place to squat also. some were even under ground with dirt piled on the roofs.
There was an Order here in Northern PA at least here in
Schuylkill county area to Burn 'em When you Find 'Em.

Some were In towns, Some were in the woods.
if the place was empty it was the perfect "winter shanty"

How much loot was buried under & around these "Shanties" and never recovered is anybody's Guess.
