Since this never got answered, while it's not directly relevant to your NC find, Onondaga chert (New York) is sometimes known as Stink Rock because it smells like petroleum. Maybe you've got something geologically similar ?

We have a local type here in TN called fort Payne black that smells like asphalt/petroleum when freshly knapped.
