Cool Axe, I'd leave it exactly like that. Goes to show what we go through to get something out of the ground. That one was a real bugger.

Well hello neighbor. The axe with the root through it is a neat find. Always love to pull any CW relics out. Got a place here in Rhea County I am hoping to get back into soon. I have pulled several Merrill Carbines, 3 ringers, and a few Eagle Buttons from it. Just got permission on the adjoining property a couple of weeks ago. Congrats and HH.

Congratulation on your CW relics. Love the root through the handle and would leave it like that too.

I know there is a web site that you can tell the era of the axe by the shape of it. i can't think of it off hand. Nice job

Overkill the axe that you found I believe is called a Felling Axe. They were issued to the troops. I found one a couple months ago at my CW site here in NC. It looks a bit like yours. My pic is below.

1865 Quartermaster's Manual
"Felling axes, – to be of three sizes, and to be made of the best American iron and steel; blade to be well steeled to the edge; for medium sized axe, length of blade, 7 3/4 inches; width of pole 3 7/16 inches; thickness of pole, 7/8 of an inch; width on edge, 4 3/4 to 5 inches; size of eye 2 3/8 by 3/4 inches, oval in shape. The other sizes to correspond proportionally and with the above specifications, and to all average in weight 56 pounds to the dozen."

"Axe handles, – to be made of good, seasoned hickory wood, 34 to 36 inches long, and free from knots or shakes."
