That's where my head was.. That thing is a testament to how badly our new coins are made and the reality of hoping for treasure while metal detecting a beach... that was a zinckoln penny.

I know what you mean about the zinc coins, they can be just completely encrusted even ones you find in a dry desert.

Yes I cleaned it and then I posted that it was a modern zinc and copper penny they deteriorate ridiculously quickly.

Where the copper plating is worn off, it seems the exposed zinc can react with certain types of soils becoming encrusted objects (or EOs as they have been called). You certainly don't want to discard EOs and especially ones found on Florida beaches. I've seen pics of EOs which turned out to be silver shipwreck coins.

I suppose you could keep busy, just cleaning up encrusted objects.

Hey Gator,

You were slowly cleaning this one, I believe, in another thread. How goes that?

Hey surf.. 2 of the pieces were unsalvageable and one was a silver piece that may have been a piece of rosary or earning with what appears to be a small pearl in the center unfortunately that was damaged by the conservation liquid.
I apologize for the quality of my photos I recently rinsed my camera off at the same time as my metal detector...oops
