As a small magnetometer user(I use it with my PI for iron id) I wanted to point out that a lot of earth iron rich rocks of significant size will also be detected by any utility locator which of course is a magnetometer. I have a magnetite specimen (fist sized detected with a metal detector) that will be detected at 20". So "hot rocks" that are detected by a metal detector will also be detected by a mag.

Have fun on your meteorite quest. I bet it will be a lot of work covering a large field with a utiltiy magnetometer. Sort of like covering a large field with a stick.

Keep us posted
