I just pull off the copper and any yellow brass (think there is brass on it been several years since i scrapped one) and haul the rest in. If your lucky there will be rust in it so it will weight more

Ditto, I remove all the non-ferrous metals on the outside of the water heater, then take the rest in intact. I do not think there is enough inside to be worth messing with.
