Later this week I might be buying an SD 2200d. It has a 11" dd coil and new battery. They are asking $600. It sounds like a fair deal. I intend to use it for gold prospecting and maybe beach detecting. From what I have read it's a reasonable Gold Detecting machine with a useless iron discrimination feature. What I don't know is what I should look for when testing the machine? And is $600 a fair deal for this machine?

Yes that is a good deal for that detector, providing they didn't beat it to death. If is looks like they took good care of it. Then get it. As for what to look for on testing it. Does the battery hold a charge for time manual says it should?, are there any cracks, has it ever been dropped or dropped in water?, can you get it to quiet down when noise canceling and ground balancing?, how well does it pick up tiny gold and at what depth with air test. Are there any broken or missing parts?, how many coils come with the detector. Hope this helps.
