These "squiggles" are made from different types of larvae or bugs that burrow under the bark. There are many different types, we have a lot of that where I'm at which is mainly wooded areas north. I used to wonder about them as a kid and my biology teacher explained it along with just different people in my area.

Bark beetle or other pest while tree was alive is likely. Also similar pest under bark after tree dead. Very common either way.
