I’m betting that if the wood was removed you’d find female threads inside the hole.

I was thinking a shift knob from a tractor but that wouldn't be wood inside unless the wood was put into it after the fact.

Yes, the inside is threaded, 3/8 x 24. I thought it may be a flagpole topper, just seems small.

1-1/4" diameter brass ball, has a hole in it with wood still in there. The hole is about 3/8" diameter. Was found at a scout camp that was probably farmland at one time.
Looks like one of the flyballs from a small pickering steam engine governor? The 3/8 thread would be about right.

Givin its provenance my money is on flagpole topper. Of course that doesn't mean that's what it started out its life as.
