Re: 1/2 Reale find from a couple month's back
BuffaloBackhoe -- The coin had evaded me the first time I detected it, I found the ground too frozen to dig it up. So upon going back on a warmer day, I easily dug down the three inches thinking I'd found another wheatie among the other nearby signals, but I was surprised to find this, indeed.
gsmeiers -- Thanks.
Leon -- it definitely did in this case. I wonder if the holed coins became more sentimental and were carried as conversation pieces or jewelry items or if they were just strung and unfortunately lost.
As many holed coins as they were back then, does anyone know if it was frowned upon to receive a holed coin in trade? It seems that the person drilling the coins could accumulate enough silver scrap to make holing profitable. Clearly the mint's decision to mill the edge of gold and silver was evidence enough that it was a problem, but what about holing?
