Sounds like marketing by the seafood dealer. Or too much Yuengling.

I eat a fair number of oysters (ok, my doc says too many) and pearls in this area are common - and worthless.
 

I think this Pottsville correspondent must have enjoyed and then emulated Mark Twain's story "How I edited an agricultural paper".
