Hi all. I got out in the snowy corn field this morning for a couple hours. I have hunted this field before and found the nice old gold gilded civilian button that still had thread that TheCannonballGuy says probably really was period thread. It's a very small section of a larger field that is separated by a drainage ditch from the larger part of the field. Finds were lots of canslaw, an old flattened piece of lead that might have been a round ball, and the silver. After about an hour, I got a solid 78 at 6 inches on the ATP and out came the Merc. I think it's my oldest one - 1918 P.

Nice find OD. Congrats on getting 10 Mercs this year, there may be more, we have 1 month to go. GL&HH!

Nice silver Merc find! It would be great if you found two more, then you'd have one for each month!

I hope to have another month to hunt, Tom. Today started rifle season for deer, so I am limited to the sites that are safe and not going to interfere with the hunters.

2 more is a nice thought, but I'm not going to hold my breath, lol!

Mercs one of my favorite coins, congrats on the Big Ten!

Great job OD. The finds that come from the snow always feel a little sweeter

Lol no. Today was a paid holiday. I get the First Day of Buck off every year. Helps to live in a "redneck" area, lol. I bet they don't get it off in Philly! ( Gotta bust on George for the redneck comment still! )

Feels pretty good, don't it? Finding a silver in a cornfield.

Came in at 78? That's a bit odd.

WTG!

Yes sir, very odd. Maybe it was on edge, I don't know? Ground balance was 84 and is normally 82.

Congrats on finding some 'field silver' Dave!
I think finds like that in a farm field are the most gratifying! :occasion14:

Thanks Dave! My last 2 have come from farm fields while I was looking for something a bit older, lol.

She is a sweet looking lady, maybe that field put that nice grey hue to her and tried to hide her. It made her ring different, instead of a 83. Maybe the fertilizer changed the VDI?

Either way, I know it would of put a smile on this old dude's face.

Yeah, I like the patina on this one too, Brad. Usually I like to shine the Merc's like you with baking soda, but this one told me to leave it as it has matured to be.

Excellent find, OD! I find more mercs then Roosevelt dimes and am glad cause they are so much prettier. Hope everyone up north gets some more nice weather before it shuts ya'll down.

Ya know, that's really a good term for it! Matured. Kinda explains what I feel when I find an old silver that isn't all bright and shiny and new looking. Sometimes, I'll clean up one that has matured unevenly. Looking more mottled. But some, they're just perfect! :)

Nice silver its been a while since i got one of those:icon_thumleft:
