Ha., thanks Casper

Its a scarce one to find, but looks more broken than cut. When you get a cut one, you will see the difference.

Cool, I have one cut penny and yes it's very neatly edged :)

Compete coins in VF are £100 book price.

Another book you need is:

'Coins of Scotland Ireland and the Islands'. Pre-decimal issues (second edition) SPINK 2003 - (not sure if they have a later issue, if so get it)

Yes I've seen a lot of images online that are from SPINK. Have you any idea what that brass strap is I posted in the what is it thread. It looks very old

I looked at it, but have no firm ideas other than it looks post-1900.

Yes it's a nice to to get, would love a whole one, the guy with me got 3/4 there's plenty there but hard to hit

Well done on getting the hammered, one of nicest things one can lay their eyes on when digging in the dirt.

For sure :) I've hit 9 in the last 4 outings.. Addicted to them now ;)

Great find Joe, and at least you got enough of it to make a positive ID. I didn't realize the practice of cutting coins started that early although I guess that one could have been cut at some point well after being minted. I've found about 20 hammereds here in Virginia but none of them are cut. My earliest cut piece is from a 1660s pine tree shilling. If someone out there can shed some light as to when the practice of cutting coins became popular please chime in (and include references if possible). Thanks in advance.

I'm not exactly sure when they started cutting but I thought it dated back a lot longer.. Maybe not. I have an Edward 1st ad it has the crioss on the back, which I thought was for the cut? It's date is 1279. Anyone ?

I have a cut halfpenny of CNUT 1016–1035. Not sure when exactly they started but some time before then.(but none of the Saxon Sceats were, as far as I know) We have also found several larger Roman bronze Coins that were cut in half.

Do we know what they used to cut them ? Black N Decker hardly go back to the bronze age :)

They looked like modern tin snips/Scissors.
