I found this button this summer in a location that had revolutionary war action and a house was built in later years around 1820. I'm sure this button dates from before the home was built but can't seem to find a match but then the button is pretty worn. It is solid brass and and looks like it was turned. The shank is gone but the base is square and appears to be attached to the button and not soldered on. The front of it has a crown but I see no other details. Also no backmark.
It is just over 1 inch and the weight is 8.4 grams.
I really hope this is a good find and some one knows what it is thanks for the help.

Search here:

UK Finds Database - - - UKDFD

I did a quick look and couldn't find your button, but there are 37 pages!

I see several with the crown but I think there is some sort of device surrounding the crown on your button, you may be able to better see it in person.

I'm pretty sure this is not a button. The broken 'shank' looking piece is not right for any period button I have seen. Clearly the Crown looks to be an 19th C British Type, & although I have no clue what it inserted into, it reminds me of a saw medallion or some other quality tool.

I'm almost 100% sure it's not a saw medallion I have found a tin of them and it's not right.

What makes the crown 19th C ?

You know I have always tried to help as many people as I can on this site and have learned myself and have helped new members. Some people on treasurenet when they type you listen because they know what they are talking about. I thought that about one person until I asked him a question about a post he had made and this is what I got back. I asked because I didn't know and was trying to learn.

Don't let one persons response put you off, most people try and help and don't call themselves self proclaimed experts, they just know were to look for the answer. I to don't think your item is a button, more like some type of leather/wood furniture mount/stud.. A bit similar to the one in the link. Perhaps the Crown means a royal approval or something :dontknow: But keep asking the questions...that's how we all learn :icon_thumleft:
