Hello, I purchased a cob from a friend who he got from his grandfather. Apparently his grandfather worked with Mel fisher in key west. I live in south Florida. Anyways I paid 650 dollars. I had a jeweler confirm it's 22k gold. It measures out to be 19-20mm. Here's the catch. It weighs 4.86 grams. In the picture it's in a 18k bezel. I removed bezel before weighing it. With bezel it hits 6.7 gram and without it's 4.86 grams. Now I've read on clipping coins and what not and ocean wear over 300 years could also play a part in weight loss. I hope there's an expert out there that can restore some hope in me.

Welcome to Treasure Net !!
The prescribed weight of an 8 escudos in gold (or silver) is 27.4680 grams till 1728.
At full weight your 2 escudos would weigh 6.867 grams.
So your coin is about 30% light of full weight.
Don....

Do you think it's a fake ?

In my opinion this is a fake...
I have to say its "in my opinion"...
For I cannot just flat out say... NO its not one.

No one would "wrap" a silver escudo that way... That loose... LET ALONE a gold one.
IF in fact it is one of Mels pieces... it will be marked.
Too good a coin to be set so wrong and sketchy.
Wire that the "wrap" consists of is WAY too thin.

I can go on... but here is good.
Sorry... but this seems sketchy to me. Real sketchy.
BUT ! ! !
Ya just never know the whole story sometimes..
Without seeing the coin... well.. you know... :)

Can you take a few more pics of the SIDES of the coin please. ?

PS> > > A coin like this would be worth a very tidy some of money if real BTW,

You got it OUT OF the bezel that quick ?
Holy sheesh !

I had it removed from bezel earlier today from a jeweler

He wasn't able to tell me if it was real but he did say it is 22k gold. He tested it

The coin or the bezel part was 22 ? ?

where is the bezel now ?

How did he test the coin ? scratch test ? ? ?

Bezel is 18k and coin is 22k and he had me scratch the coin on a black pad and he then dropped some sort of acid over it

Ok... just so you know where I am "coming from" on the "bezel this" "bezel that" and so forth...

Even a "copy"... OR a replica rather... from Mel is set better than this coin... bezel wise...
For example... check this one out... it is a replica ... 4 prong setting... Which is norm.
Mel Fisher 24K Gold Replica 8 Escudo Coin Pendant 14k YG Bezel Necklace Charm | eBay

Just so you set your mind at ease... You MAY have one of Mels pieces...
BUT...
Coin needs to be authenticated.
There is a database of ALL coins both real and replica/copies that came from Mel.
This COULD be a coin from "someone who found this...
OR... things that "play into" this coin COULD be...
Bad jeweler...
First time jeweler for this type of coin...
3 prongs so to "show" more of coin...
Coin could have been "snagged" on something and bezel was "stretched"...
On and on...
Could be a good replica.
STILL...
Worth what you paid IF you can "id" it.

The devil is in the details on this...
Including that bezel.
It may be real... it may not.
Maybe some pics of that bezel "shank"... aka "the hoop". ? ?

My friends grandfather supposedly worked with Mel and Mel gave him just the coins. My friend is who had it put in a bezel. He has another coin in a deposit box without a bezel and his grandfather has a escudos 8 coin that he wears in a bezel from what I hear.

That coin looks "right as rain"...
Bezel looks like crapola... but this means little...
MAn you need that coin authenticated....
With this pic that coin looks damn good.

The weight is what scares me because everything else is legit. 19mm diameter, 22k gold etc
