I recently moved to the Daytona Beach area and am interested in hunting the beaches down south where the 1715 fleet was. Can I just walk out on the beaches and fire up my metal detector?

Unless something has changed recently, you can hunt from base of dunes to mean high tide.

I went down to the McLarty Treasure Museum, which is the site of the survivors camp, and the park ranger told me that you can hunt from the surf line to the high tide line. No one on any Florida beach can tell you to leave. Just don't go into the water or up into the dunes.

That's what I've always read.... stay out of the dunes , stay out of the water. Good Luck !
