2009_02232011july0011.webp2009_02232011july0009.webp Found this morning in a neighbor's yard outside of Manheim PA. Anything special about the year, it's value, and how to clean it? Excited to have found my first Colonial silver. A 1 Real, I believe.

Congrats...if it's the size of a nickel it's a 1 real. If it's smaller than a dime it's a 1/2 real. Wet it and wrap tightly in tinfoil a few times. It'll get warm and smell like rotten eggs--use a new piece of foil each time. Wash it in soap and water then rub a baking soda slurry on it a few times to get it clean.

Congratulations on your first Spanish silver. Nothing special, not worth much, just clean it with a soft bristle toothbrush and a dab of dish washing liquid with water and that's it. Cleaning the back of it should reveal if its a one reale. It will say 1R and other info as to where it was minted. (mint mark). My first one reale was a 1773 here in Northumberland County with a G mint mark (Guatemala), and it was a thrill to dig one. Again, nice find..................Rich
