I haven't been able to detect since early November, hopefully the ground will thaw enough in March to do some digging. Waiting is hard lol.

I went to a flea market with my wife today, and came across this coin. I always wanted to find a piece of Spanish silver, but there is 0.0 chance of digging any up where I live. It looks authentic to me, and I figured it was worth the risk. It's heavy, and has that 'silver sound' to it. I took it out of the holder because I wanted to really get a good close look at the entire coin, I hope that didn't hurt anything.

I think it's so cool to have a piece of silver that sank with the El Cazador, and sat on the bottom of the sea for 200 years...

Thanks for looking...any thoughts?

Awesome find.

Cool can i see pics of the edge?

Is there a seam mark?

Hard to tell, but if it was sealed and you broke it,I would imagine you just lost the merit of authenticity in the future?

One simple test is to use a magnet to see if it is magnetic. Of course silver isn't.

Thanks for the feedback! I guess I should post this in the "coins" forum as well.

I tried the magnet--absolutely no magnetic attraction, woohoo.

Here are some pics of the edge. I see no signs of a seam mark, but I do see the remains of an edge detail pattern. I looks like other 8 reales I have seen in pictures.

I did open the coin holder, but I was so curious to see the edge....It's safely back inside now.

I bought a few 8 Reales at the NY International coin show a couples of years from a large and reputable dealer a couple of years back for less than twice melt, that were also salt water damaged and wreck recovered. He had big bags of them, the better ones selling for somehat more.Mine looks like yours condtionwise,so if did'nt pay too much I think you did fine.
