I found this 1794 liberty cap lettered edge
I know there are many varieties and I am unsure which one this is.
Is there anyone more educated on these coins that might be able to give me further insight as to what it is exactly? should it be graded/slabbed?
Any help would be appreciated
As of now the coin has only been gently rinsed with distilled water
Dave-

Wow, nice detail and condition. :icon_thumleft:

One of the finest dug examples I've seen posted in my ten years on T-net ! I would have it conserved / graded .

I’m normally not a fan of having dug coins conserved and graded. But this is one of the nicest Lic Caps I’ve ever seen dug. Considering what it is I would seriously consider sending that one in. I rarely feel this way about dug coins including my own that have come out in really nice condition. Congrats on a beautiful copper

Sorry, I have no details for you. Other than to say HOLY @^%#^!

Stunning detail. I think I'd have to send that one in. Congrats on a great recovery. 🙌

WOWZA!! Congrats, beautiful coin!

Wow! One of the earliest American coins I'm thinking. Congratulations. Thanks for posting it.

Very nice coin. To your question, it's up to you to see if you want it slabbed or not. Only PCGS has a restoration service. It costs about $69 to join them. I did this year for the first time. I found a very early half cent and was hoping they could restore and slab it. It was much worse looking than yours. They sent it back untouched and charged $55. Which is what their terms and conditions stated. It is fair, but I wanted them to try. Anyway, yours would probably not come back with a grade, but either "genuine" "environmental damage" or something like that. I also have an account with ANACS. There is no membership fee. The may or may not grade it. You can look both up on the net. But it's still a nice coin.

Beautiful copper. I would definitely send it to PCGS for conserving and slabbing. It will still be valuable beyond the cost even if it does not have a grade IMHO PS More of the story on finding it would be great.

Absolutely beautiful coin. Great find! I may be in the minority, but I wouldn't send it for grading OR conservation. I don't have a lot of confidence in their conservation. An early copper expert could do a much better job. Once something is done to the coin it won't come back to what you have. It's beautiful as it is. Advanced copper collectors collect coins, not plastic slabs.

Although I'm no expert on '94's, it somewhat resembles a S-31. The diagnostic being the lower hair curl. What yours doesn't have is the the die chips in the left obverse field. It's possible your piece is an earlier die state before the chips appeared, but as someone without the expertise in 1794's this is just conjecture. Great coin.

That is one of the most beautiful Liberty Cap Large Cents I've ever seen dug! :notworthy:

A very nice dug very early large cent you found today.

Wow again & what a beauty congrats..great detail...must have been in some well drained soil ?

awesome coin, good luck on your decision. a lot to consider

Generally I would say no to grading. But as you’ve been told this is a great find and in great condition for a dug large cent. The obverse is nice for sure. If you are thinking of selling it may well be worth getting it slabbed. Use PCGS or NGC. If you are not going to sell it why spend the money. In that case do your own research or take it too a coin shop or show to get some opinions. Great find.

Great looking copper and I'd save my $$$ and just enjoy it. Congrats on the recovery.

What does “graded/slabbed” mean? I have a Mexican silver coin I found here in NJ. I’ll post it soon.

There are 3rd party grading companies that will give their opinion on a coins authenticity and condition, and then "slab" it by putting it in a sealed coin holder.

NGC is one example but there are others https://www.ngccoin.com/
