1800's(?) House Site Hunt--Long--Pictures

Last Friday, knehi(my son) and I went to the location of what I have been told, is the former site of an 1800's house and outbuildings.(ya, I know this is Sunday, but it took me a while to get everything cleaned up a little!!)

My daughter's boy friend's Dad owns the property, and the boy friend, who is 38 years old, says that he was always told that the house was built in the 1800's, but was torn down before he was born, so it has been gone for a while.

The property is now a pasture for cows. The mysterious thing about it is that the house was torn down, but they left part of the sidewalk system in the ground as you will see in the picture.

If you are looking to see all the old coins that we found, then you are going to be dissapointed, because all we dug( this time) were relics, but some of them are kind of interesting, and I was hoping that some of you fine folks could help me date some of this stuff, and/or identify it. We covered a very small area of this site, so many, many more trips will be needed to really go over it. Hopefully, we will stumble onto some coins while we hunt.

Here is a picture of what the front part of the site looks like now. Notice the sidewalks still in place. The well is off to the left of the picture, and down over a hill. Man, I sure wouldn't have wanted to go for a bucket of water during a blizzard. Its a long way down there to the well.

Here is knehi getting ready to fire up the Ace 250.

Here are some of the relics that I dug along that sidewalk, and a little furthur back.

This is a brass finneal(sp)(man, I wish I could spell better). I don't know what it went on, but the ideas are endless. It could have been on a bed, clock, furniture, an old steam engine, and so on.

Ya, I know that this one is a hinge, but I thought someone might be able to date the house by the design of the hinge.
MetalDetectingRelics003.jpg

An old paper shotgun shell. I did a little research on this one, and found out it was sold by Montgomery Ward, but I haven't been able to date it yet.
MetalDetectingRelics010.jpg

Old harness rings. Knehi also found one of these. I don't know what the thingy is on the right.
MetalDetectingRelics009.jpg

Children were here too. Knehi found the little kettle, and I found the plate.
MetalDetectingRelics008.jpg

I know what this one is. Lets see if anyone else can figure it out. By the way, its flat on both ends.
MetalDetectingRelics007.jpg

A small brass/copper oval thingy, and the thingy on the right has a twist on both ends.(broken chain loop?)
MetalDetectingRelics006.jpg

My theory on these is that they are harmonica reeds. Am I right??
MetalDetectingRelics005.jpg

I was trying to figure out what this cap went on, when knehi said that it was a whiskey bottle cap, and that he had one at home that he had found, so I took pictures of the old bottle and its cap too, and they are a perfect match. Don't know how old it is. I have to do more research.

Well, we lasted about 2 and 1/2 hours out in the field before it started to get a little warm, but I will be going back lots of times before this place is gone over all the way.

It was really fun hunting with knehi, and I hope that he is able to find a coin or two out there. It sure would be nice if I found some too!!!

Sorry this is so long, but its hot outside, so I'm in here at the computor.

Happy Hunting.

Nice finds, but you need to keep digging. The silver is there somewhere. Looks like a cool site and glad you had a friend to hunt with.

Sounder, thats great that that you have a potentialy productive spot to hunt with your son! Keep going back & hit it hard, Im very sure there are old coins to be found. :)

Re: 1800's(?) House Site Hunt--Long--Pictures

That twisted thing that's flat on both ends looks like part of a reciprocating egg beater ?

Re: 1800's(?) House Site Hunt--Long--Pictures

Mojjax, you certainly have the right idea, but after showing it around to a lot of friends, and forums, everyone agrees that it is the shaft that comes out of the top of a childs spinning top. It had a knob on one end, and you pushed it down into the top to make it spin.

Thanks for the repley!!

Happy Hunting.

Sounder, very cool relics. (I am content to hunt a site with no coins, as long as I get good relics out of it!) The coins may be very deep or on edge. At any rate, it looks like a very interesting site with tons of area to hunt. This place should be good for many trips. Thanks for sharing the pics... the more the better!

The brass object is a finial from either an andiron or a fireplace tool such as a poker. It is an excellent find. Look for a very fine line going down either side, indicating cast marks; if you see this, it means "half-cast" construction and puts the piece in the 18th / early 19th Century. Sometimes the craftsmen got rid of the line almost completely, but they usually left a trace. The Midwest does not have a lot of houses going back into the 1700s or early 1800's, but back then families did not get rid of perfectly useful tools, so a lot of them had things handed down from past generations or brought from back east.

Not sure about the hinge offhand, but cast iron butt hinges started to be in wide use around the 1840's, I believe. If I had to guess from looking at yours I'd say they're from the last quarter of the 1800's. The pointed hinge finial makes me want to say 1870-1890.

Re: 1800's(?) House Site Hunt--Long--Pictures

Wow, great information Rusted_ Iron!!!!

The brass finial does indeed have a thin casting line on each side.

I have a friend in Canada that lives in a house that was built in 1860, and he says that the hinges in his house look like the one I found.

Thanks for taking the time to date some of these relics for me. This information makes me think that the house that sat on this land was indeed built in the mid to late 1800's as I was told.

My hunting buddy, and my son and I think that we could easily spend the next year off and on hunting this site.

Thanks again!!
