It was a beautiful, pleasant day in Western PA; after umpiring a 10AM game, I was off to a house in the neighborhood where I grew up to do some detecting. One house down the street from us was built in 1920 and my parents' house in 1941. Dad grew up there and lived most of his life in it. Those were the first two from the "modern" era. I've noticed on some old maps that there were at least two old homesteads that preceded those I've mentioned; one was replaced by the 1920 house and I found some interesting coins and old relics at the older homestead. There was another just south, and it was on ground close to that where I spent this afternoon. The house there now dates from probably the 1950's, so I found the kinds of things I expected to: a silver 1950 Roosevelt dime and several wheat pennies. This wasn't an exhaustive search; I'm actually looking for something much better. If I ever find it you'll be the first to know. I'd guess there's two acres on this property and I moved around, seeing if there was a difference in the types of relics found from one end to the other. Boy, was there! At the east end, the ground appeared to be ideal for an orchard or something to help sustain a 19th century family. I began searching and quickly got a very strong signal, the kind you don't ignore. Imagine my surprise when I pulled an 1838 large cent out of the ground! It had to be associated with the second old homestead, which was once less than 300 feet away. The second interesting find in that area, again probably attached to the second homestead, was a 1908 Beaver County Dog Tax tag. Now, we call them licenses but governing bodies were more honest then. This predates my earliest dog tax, to that point, by at least 8 years. I've thrown in a picture of a Buffalo nickel, also found on the "newer" part of the property near the current house. I haven't done a long stretch of detecting for quite a while and I'm beat; I don't know if I can face the much hotter temps we're expecting tomorrow. Still, when there's treasure to be found....
