At the bottom of the "U" it looks to be a different size than the rest is there a difference of the thickness of the rest of the piece.

Yes there is a half inch ridge area that rested on the back edge. The picture in the post is the reverse side so you can see the mentioned ridge. Not sure really for decoration---was this edge a striker area making the relic a fire striker? Thank you Back-of-the-boat for drawing attention to this area.

Looks a bit like an old equalizer splitter for an emergency brake cable on a vehicle.
