I found this extremely rare 1865 war date 2 cent piece on a cold, rainy, sleeting January 2021 day in Nashville, Tennessee. Also found was an 1898 silver Barber dime and three .69 caliber minie bullets. The 2 cent piece was in a hole where we had dug out a .69 cal. minie earlier. The signal was faint and when I finally reached the coin, I wondered how a quarter got down to 20 inches deep but after pulling it out I knew it was old. Initially I thought it was a shield nickel. My relic hunting partner recognized what it was. The rarity is due to the coin only being produced from 1864 to 1872 and then a third of them pulled out of circulation and repurposed as 1 cent pieces.
