Well dug this old nickel today. Had just enough detail left on it to id it. Can see the 5 and the stars and rays on the back. Shield can be seen on the front. Dug with my Garrett Ace 250. At about 6 inches. First shield i have dug. Wish I could bring a little more detail out of her, but she is in bad shape. Here are the pics. Hope everyone likes them.

Chris

Whats the peroxide method?? Wonder if that would bring out some more detail??

ZAX, Take some Hydrogen Poroxide in a small PLASTIC dish & heat it up in the microwave for about 30 seconds, drop the nickel in after it comes out of the microwave & let it sit in there for a while, repeat heating the poroxide if you have to without the nickel in it! Total cleaning time might be an hour? But keep the poroxide warm! a small brass cleaning brush might help as well, just don't get to harsh with it!

I have no luck using peroxide on old nickels, I use vinegar and salt with old nickels and have great luck

Thats about he shape of all the (five) Shields I have dug!!Great find!!

Nice find, the only shield I dug was about that ugly. Still a great find.

I'd hit it with a drommel tool with a alum brush, as long as you already know its not a key date.
Some will cringe at that suggestion but hay thats me.

I agree with goes forever vinegar and salt is best on nickles.First time i tried it i was toatally amazed.ONly took about 20 minutes and went from orange and crusty to clean as a whistle.jon

I use Lime A Way Gel (green bottle) to clean my nickels.
Put it in a container with a dished bottom (not flat), make sure both sides are coated evenly and leave it in for about 12 hours.
Here is a pic with an uncleaned nickel and 3 cleaned ones.
If its not clean, throw it in for another 12 hours.
I rinse them off with tap water and rub them with my fingers, then a soft cloth...make sure you get all of the haze off! otherwise it will keep working the nickel and will discolor it!

wow impressive results~

I use the Worchestershire sauce method,,,,,, works like a charm

GREAT FIND. HOPE YOU FIND MORE IN 2009

If a coin is corroded, you can find ways of cleaning it to bring out detail but once its lost its skin and your down to a rusty slab, you usually wont get much better. Regardless, its a great find and you deserve an ATA-BOY! 8)
