1876 Canadian cent

[Echoes]

I haven't seen much here about Canadian coins. Are these sought after? We think it's pretty cool! Found it by our house foundation while raking leaves. I'll try to upload a pic, but I'm still learning how to work this. How do you clean bronze coins? Or should I clean it at all since everything is legible on it? Would appreciate any thoughts.
All the features are clear on both sides. My pic of the other side didn't come out well enough to post. I'll work on my photo technique.

I am not sure what it would be worth.
I will clean my coins only with a little water, gets the loose dirt off.

A few years ago that coin's retail values were: $1, $2.75, $4.00 and $7.00 in VG-8, F-12, VF-20 and XF-40. The mintage was 4M. Weight: 3.24g (bronze)

I wouldn't clean it at all man! It looks just great the way it is!
The ones that I find here in Canada come out of the ground looking like death warmed over, you've got a nice find there, don't mess with it any further. If mine are really cruddy, I'll treat it to a hot peroxide bath for 10 minutes.

Thanks so much to everyone for the kind words, support, and input. This is our first coin find, and totally unexpected. We had dug a shallow trench for a propane tank, a few years back, and were clearing the area to plant blueberry bushes this spring when this coin jumped out from the rake...didn't even have to fire up our White's detector. The house is pre 1900 so there's no telling what we'll find if we actually try! To Dave/Antiquarian: Thanks for the advice and nice pics...I agree about not messing with a good thing; we like it fine just the way it is.

I use virgin olive oil and let them soak for as long as they need to loosen up hard crust. After it softens a bit, use a soft toothbrush lightly on it. If it still has buildup, let it soak longer. I once soaked an indian head cent for about a week. Although, yours looks great already! It shows authentic age but has no buildup.

I was told that WD40 cleans old copper but I have not tried it yet. I guess I should do that before repeating it but if you don't know what the result will be just try on some similar type of coins like a newer penny that is mostly copper. Less is better, if you want to preserve its value its best not to clean any more than you think you need to.
