RP and I got out to one of our "Hotspots" today. I used my Blue Max DD coil again, and it worked wonders for me. I got 12 Wheaties for the day. One of the Wheaties was 5" deep, so the DD will penetrate decently. This coil works so well in the trashy areas, that I did not even hear the "junk" signals. It picks between the trash and only produces the "good" tones.

My last find of the day produced a "Dime" reading that pinpointed at 2.5". It turned out to be an 1877-1881 Rutherford Hayes commemorative coin. Can anyone tell me more about this find? I would greatly appreciate it.

I also found an Indian Head. It is in horrible shape, though. I now have 42 Indians for the year! I'm gaining on you, Brian!

HH! ;D

Re: 1877-1881 Commemorative Coin

I think it might be one of the presidential game tokens handed out in the 60's by either Shell gas stations or Amaco. But check to make sure. Wtg!! on the wheats and token. HH

This coin was probably minted in 1881 or a little after. The reverse has some written words explaining how he won the presidential seat. There is no gas station name on the reverse, so that knocks that guess out.

doyboy, can you post a pic of the reverse?

I'm with Rvbvetter on this one. The dates 1877-1881 represent Hayes' term of office, but the token was not struck in 1881. It's what's sometimes called a "presidential data coin," due to the reverse text. These were presidential commemorative tokens issued around 40-50 years ago. Although some did bear advertisers' names (Shell, Cracker Jack, etc.), most were stock/generic pieces and used in a variety of ways— issued in gas station promotions, with prizes for completed sets or certain instant winner pieces; included as prizes in boxes of breakfast cereal; handed out by banks to youngsters opening or adding to savings accounts. In some cases, the companies who supplied them also later issued them in sets or albums for sale in gift shops and novelty catalogs.

There's one like yours on eBay right now, by the way:

Keith.......I remember getting these at the gas station when I was a youngster. You could get a nifty walnut display case for them too. Here are some that I've found over the years.

James Polk
James Garfield x 2
Martin Van Buren
Wm McKinley
Zachary Taylor X 2

Hey, Doy. I just found Franklin Roosevelt this week.

We should put all our tokens together and make the complete set. :D
