From the date of the newspaper he had to have been at the old depot, assuming it was there that he was killed. Looks like I would give the area a looking over if it was my neck of the woods.......

at that time in History the area may have been grown like a hayfield or saturated with Mud, or Both.
and by the time someone improved the land there may have not been anyone who remembered
