Take a look at this bad boy! A friend from our metal detecting club gave this 1909 Coburg Oregon Dog Licence tag to me today! He dug it in Coburg more than 10 years ago. He told me about it a few weeks ago and I asked if I could take a picture of it to send to Bill Bone (the author of U.S. DOG LICENSE TAGS) because there isn't any known dog tags listed in the book for Coburg Oregon.

So, after taking the pictures . . . . my friend says, "You can have it if you want it" . . . . . and I say, "WAIT . . . WHAT?! SERIOUSLY?! SWEET!!!!! HECK YES! THANKS MAN!!" I tried offering him something in trade for it or some cash . . . . but he said NO . . . . just knowing it's going to a good home makes him happy.

The other cool things about this tag is that the serial number is very low ~ #8 . . . . . plus, the spelled license with a 'c' at the end instead of an 's' ~ LICENCE . . . . that's the European way of spelling it ~ SO COOL!!!

That's a sweet tag. Congrats on the gift. My oldest is 1922 - a triangle tag.

Does anyone know when dog lic. were first issued..anywhere?

I'm just getting into collecting sog tax tags as a hobby! It's very interesting! I bought Bill Bones' book a few weeks back . . . . it only lists US tags ~ it has a tag listed for Charleston S.C. dated 1850! SO COOL!!

But there's European tags way back! I've seen a Netherlands tag dated 1797.

Tell me more about your 1922 tag! Where is it from? Post a picture!

Neil

Here's my 1922 from Killingly, CT. Found at an old barn foundation.
And my 1924 from Putnam, CT. Found a few days ago at a mid 1700's home.

OH YEAH ~ very cool tags man!

The O.K. (oldest known) tag for Killingly is 1907 . . . and 1920 for Putnam.

The weird thing that I've notice about most CT dog tags is that they don't mention that they are "DOG TAX" or "DOG LICENSE" tags. I just bought a 1918 Derby CT tag, and a 1936 Shelton CT tag . . . and they too don't have "DOG TAX" nor "DOG LICENSE" printed on them.

Real nice friend there!
Dug my oldest last year, a Denver, 1897.
(I believe that's the date).
Reading up on early Denver history, I found an article about how many early tag numbers were duplicated
so as to collect double the amount of taxes, and then only record one dog tag.
Kudos,
Carl

Nice Dog tag...congrats !

The author of US Dog License Tags is named Bill BONE?!

Did you make that up, Neil? :tongue3:

Do you have a cutoff date for your collection (how recent is too recent)?

NO ~ I didn't make it up! William J. Bone! SERIOUSLY!! HA HA HA!!!

I actually like all dog tags ~ old and new! But mostly the older ones. But I like any tags with fancy serial numbers . . . for example . . ..

1) Solid serial numbers, like #333, #444, #22, #6666, #99, etc.

2) 'Ladder' serial numbers #123, #1234, #0123, etc (starting with 0 or 1).

3) Low, single digit, serial numbers #1 thru #9

4) Serial number and the year are the same, for example dated 1938 with serial #1938, or dated 1999 with serial #1999.

Cool tag, and a nice shape. Niffler
