i found the 1916 mercury dime in a worked out park in rochester, minnesota last year. it was 10 inches down by a tree. i put my knife in the hole and it was 2 inches below the sod. knife measures 8 1/4 in. dfx was in high trash mode. most silver coins are 6 inches deep or less in the ground. i have found old silver coins on top of the ground also. it depends on soil conditions. if its real rocky soil on the side of a hill they could lay there on top off the ground for a hundred years well the rain keeps washing the sand away. ok the 1916 barber was in a wooded area in another park at 4 inches down ,found in january this year when it was still warm and the ground wasnt frozen yet.. when i found it i thought what! two different coins the same year. thats how much i know about coins. i hope you injoyed this. rodgerdodger
