At lunch time today I hit a park that has been giving up 1 or 2 silver coins each 45 minute hunt. Today I found some modern coins and three wheaties but no silver until I was just about to leave. I found a dime only an inch down that was in hard packed dirt. Once I looked closer I could see it was a Mercury Dime but really crusty. I could not see a date.

Came back to the office and right into a two hour meeting. Straight from the meeting into the bathroom to run the dime under some warm water. When I wiped the front off I could see the 1916 date. I stopped cleaning it. Looked at the back which is still very crusty so I could not see if there was a mint mark or not.

When I get home I will post some pictures and ask for some feedback on how to clean the back so I can see if it is a D mintmark. Wish me luck.

Pics would help so we can see what kind of dirt or crust your dealing with. :icon_scratch: If its just dirt use warm water and your finger tips... :headbang:

Sounds great !! :o :icon_thumleft:

Thanks MUD and Tellman,

Still at work. When I get home tonight I will take some pics and post. I was just excited and wanted to share...sorry about the premature posting...lol.

I actually have a few hunts I need to post just have not had time. Found my first seated half dime on Memorial Day...1854. They sure are small...I was pumped up about that one. Hoping to get back to that site tomorrow morning if I can sneak out before the wife and kids are up.

Okay here are the pictures...I have the camera set to Macro but it is not that great. Looked at the back with a magnify glass and I don't think there is a mintmark but would still like suggestions on how to clean it. Just want to make sure I'm not mistaken.
Thanks

I would just use wet q-tips... roll the q-tips.. If there is a D it's going to be a high dollar dime..cause the front has alot of detail left... oh by the way it's going to take a alot of q-tips... don't use anything that can scratch...like a hard tooth brush or finger nail...

Just stick it in your mouth and swish it around a while. :tongue3:
Good luck on it being a "D" 8)

Re: 1916 Mercury Dime - Pictures Added

If you know where the mint mark is do what Creeper said just over the mint location. :dontknow: If it is a D :o don't clean it any more and send it in to be cleaned and graded. :headbang: If it has no mint or is a S then just clean it under your sink carefully. :icon_thumleft:

Keep @ it and HH !! ;D :D

Good luck - you can't go wrong just letting it soak in distilled water. The suspense is killing me ???

I took MUDs advice and just cleaned where the mintmark would be...no mintmark. Oh well...maybe next time.

Thanks for looking.
